The Weeknd Owns R. Kelly Classic “Down Low” With This Cover

The Weeknd released a cover of R. Kelly‘s 1995 classic “Down Low” and he owns it.

The Canadian singer drops his version of the song on the new episode of OVO Sound Radio on Saturday (Sept. 9). The Weekend chooses an interesting to release a cover of an R. Kelly classic given the current state of bad publicity surrounding the R&B legend with strong accusations of him having a relationship with a minor and having a sex cult ring with several young women. Weeknd has in the past said that this song inspired his career in music, so this cover shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Abel’s cover is slightly different from the original and would make good for a remix version two decades of Kelly released the song. The XO singer is currently embarking on the North American leg of his Starboy: Legend of the Fall world tour and will be performing in Boston, Washington DC, and Philadelphia this week. He was scheduled to perform at last month’s MTV VMAs but pulled out of the event last month due to fatigue from touring for most of the year. He will likely be performing this new single on future tour dates throughout the rest of the year. The tour will come to an end in December.

For the recent accusations against R. Kelly, the singer has strongly denied them saying that people are trying to tarnish his name. But at least one of his accusers came forward with proof that he paid her off to keep quiet about their relationship while she was an underage girl. This is not the first time that similar accusations are being laid against the R&B legend. Nevertheless, this cover of “Down Low” by the weekend is pretty dope, take a listen below. It kind of make you want to go listen to R. Kelly old catalog.

The Weeknd Reps Drake’s Whiskey In New Song

The Weeknd is a big fan of Drake‘s new Virginia Black Whiskey or perhaps he is just giving his hometown comrade hustle a shout-out.

The XO singer posted a preview of his new song with some of the lyrics referencing Drake’s luxury whiskey. “Kick back on the whiskey / Virginia black am now tipsy / On the lay like am Nipsey / Spanish girls wonna kiss me,” the Starboy singer sings. Sounds like another hit is on the way for The Weeknd.

The Weeknd is currently embarking on the North American leg of his Starboy: Legend of the Fall tour. But it looks like in between tour he has been hitting the studio to work on perhaps his next album. There are also some reports of a joint album between himself and Drake, but there are mo word yet on if the project is officially in the works or if Drizzy will be featured on this new single. We don’t even know that title of this new track, all we have is this 15 seconds snippet posted on Twitter and judging from what we hear so far it sounds pretty fire.

The Weeknd has been one of the hottest R&B stars on the scene for the last few years and both his last two albums, Beauty Behind the Madness released in 2015 and his 2016 LP Starboy, have been both certified multi-platinum and debut at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Drake launched his new whiskey brand last year June and since then the brand sold over 30,000 cases around the world. Drake and his father even famously did a commercial about the brand. He even got a shout-out from Diddy earlier this year. The whiskey brand is base on the 1970s music and fashion era.
