Ninjaman Waiting On Vybz Kartel Appeal To Weigh His Options

Ninjaman is weighing his options to appeal but seems its heavily dependent on the outcome of Vybz Kartel appeal.

The dancehall icon is two months into his life sentence and already he is considering filing an appeal for a new trial. Sources told Urban Islandz that Ninjaman felt like he was never given a fair trial and the prosecution used a witness who he feels wasn’t credible. Additionally, he thinks that his murder conviction was the authority’s way of sending a message amidst the rapid rise in crime rate across the island.

“They set an example out of him purely because he is a famous entertainer, it was almost like they used his old sins against him,” a rep for Ninjaman told us. “Was that fair for him, of course not. It’s like getting convicted even before the trial started.”

Now that Ninjaman and his attorney are weighing his appeal options, one of the things that they discussed is Vybz Kartel upcoming appeal trial which is set for July this year after being pushed by from February. Ninja’s lawyer, Valerie Neita-Robertson is also one of the lawyers on Vybz Kartel’s case.

“Being that they are two high profile artists, the system will want to keep them locked up to send a message,” sources said. “Although both cases are totally different, the fact that they’re two big-name entertainers, the system will treat them different, they will have a tougher trial because of the added press around their cases. The government will not want to look bad on the world stage. Remember these two cases made headlines around the world, so think about how bad they will look if both of them walk free on appeal.”

Vybz Kartel’s attorneys were the ones who asked the appeal court judge for more time to prepare for the case. We’re told that Ninjaman trial also played a role in that decision, the lawyers felt like that case was too close to the appeal trial and would be too fresh in the judges minds.

The lawyers know that they will have to present a near-perfect case and even then, they still have an uphill battle to prove Vybz Kartel’s innocence. “Kartel is at a disadvantage any way you look at it but yet still he has a stronger case than Ninjaman so it makes perfect sense that he would want to wait on the outcome of that case to make his next move,” his rep added. “The worst case scenario is they both spend the rest of their lives in prison.”

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, was sentenced to prison for life for murdering his friend Clive “Lizard” Williams. His protege Shawn Storm, and friends Kahira Jones and Andre St John were also convicted and sent to prison for life. The aced dancehall star will have to serve 35 years before being eligible for parole. In contract, Ninjaman, real name Desmond Ballentine, will have to serve 25 years before getting a parole hearing. Ninjaman Working With Troubled Inmates In Prison

Ninjaman is set to work with troubled inmates behind bars as part of a prison initiative he has been working on since his sentencing last month.

The dancehall legend was sentenced to life in prison for his November 20 murder conviction. He will have to serve 25 years before being eligible for parole. A rep for Ninjaman told Dancehall HipHop that he plans to use his time behind bars to mentor troubled inmates to stay out of trouble and lead a positive life. We’re also told that he himself is taking the sentencing very well and is not daunted by the prospects of spending the rest of his life in prison.

“Despite how many of his fans might feel saddened about his sentence, Ninja is upbeat and positive, we all saw him smiling when he was leaving court, while telling us to hold our heads up,” his rep said. “That’s the type of person that he is and now he is taking some inmates, particularly the younger guys, under his wings to help them change their mindsets. A lot of the younger generation look up to Ninjaman and he can simply just go and serve his time and not care about anyone else, but that is not who he is. He may never be a free man again, but a lot of these young guys will one be released back in society.”

Ninjaman, born Desmond Ballentine, is still weighing his options about appealing his conviction, but judging from the case, the odds are stacked against him. The prosecution presented an ironclad case against the dancehall icon with numerous witness, including a man who is placed into the witness protection program who identified Ninjaman as the person who pulled to trigger to kill Ricardo “Ricky Trooper” Johnson in March 2009 during a domestic dispute. The jury unanimously found the three men, Ninjaman, his son Janeil, and Dennis Clayton, guilty of charges ranging from murder to shooting with intent.

Ninjaman will be 76 years old before his first parole hearing.

How Ninjaman Conviction Could Shatter Vybz Kartel Appeal

Ninjaman murder conviction could affect Vybz Kartel appeal.

The dancehall legend was convicted of murder on November 20, 2017, and was sentenced to life in prison for the crime. In the middle of Ninjaman’s trial, Vybz Kartel upcoming appeal was pushed back from February to July of next year and now we are learning the reasons behind the delay is because of Ninjaman’s trial. But just how much could a trial involving another dancehall deejay affect Kartel’s appeal? Dancehallhiphop.com reported last month that Kartel attorneys requested more time to prepare for the case and it was granted.

Sources close to the incarcerated deejay told us that his attorneys became worried that Ninjaman’s highly publicized trial could have some impact on the outcome of his appeal case. “Maybe they thought that Ninjaman conviction could sway the judges in some way shape or form so it was a smart move to have the trial push back further down the road,” sources said. “You just never know what could happen with these delicate cases and the fact that this may be his last chance at freedom, they want to get it right so I think they made the right decision to push back the case.”

Ninjaman, real name Desmond Ballentine, has indicated that he is considering appealing his conviction, but our legal sources told us that his case was a slam dunk for the prosecution which makes it much harder for him to even get a green light from the appeal court. “Unlike Kartel’s case which had a lot of things wrong with it, Ninja’s case was a slam dunk for the prosecutor who had solid witnesses in that case. That makes it much more difficult for the appeal court judges to approve an appeal.”

Both Vybz Kartel and Ninjaman are currently serving life in prison for murder, but the Gazanation deejay and his attorneys have one more shot to secure his freedom. The Don Gorgon will have to serve 25 years before being eligible for parole while the Worl’Boss will have to serve 35 years.

Nevertheless, Ninjaman, his son Janiel, and Dennis Clayton made it to court only to learn that their sentencing is being pushed back to Monday.

The judge pushed back the hearing to Monday because the attorney representing Clayton was not in court and a character witness had to leave the court before the hearing gets underway. The deejay was seen clad in a blue suit being escorted to court by a heavy police detail. He has been behind bars since October and will likely be spending the rest of his life in prison for murder.

Ninjaman Thinks He Was Given An Unfair Trial Like Vybz Kartel

Ninjaman feels he was given a unfair trial in Jamaica’s High Court just like Vybz Kartel‘s infamous 2014 trial.

The dancehall legend was convicted for murder On November 20th in the Home Circuit court after prosecution introduced seven witnesses who testified against the deejay. But the artist is arguing that the justice system failed him because he did not commit the murder. Ninjaman’s brother, Gonzellio Ballentine, believes his brother was convicted base on a perception that he is a murderer.

“They convicted him base on his image as a bad man and as a hardcore dancehall artist who deejays gun lyrics,” Ballentine said. “That doesn’t mean that you’re a murderer or a killer, not because you do music about badness means that you’re guilty of a crime. The whole trial was bias against him from the start and they have this case over him head for eight years and now they want to send him to prison for the rest of his life.”

Some close friends of the “Kingston Town” deejay are making the same arguments with one of his close friends, who requested anonymity, telling us that they made an example out of him. “Right now the government used Ninja as an example because crime and corruption is out of control and they want to use him to send a message,” he said. “They used him because he is a powerful figure in the society just like how they used Vybz Kartel to send a message and send him to prison for life. This is not fair to these artists because that is like ending their lives.”

Ninjaman is facing a life sentence for the murder conviction. According to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Paula Llewellyn, the artists murder case stemmed from a fight over kitchen space at a house on Marl Road, Kingston 13, in March 2009. Ninjaman, real name Desmond Ballentine, his son Janiel, and Dennis Clayton were convicted for the killing of Ricardo Johnson, known in the community as Ricky Trooper.
